The CTR Permanent Composite Plug is manufactured in two configurations: as a Bridge Plug and a Flow Back Frac Plug. Modified versions are also available. Each is typically set with a conventional wireline setting tool.
The Bridge Plug can hold differential pressure from both directions. A typical application is to run it as a top plug so that the well is dead when the tubing is stripped into the well to drill out the plugs.
The Frac Plug holds pressure from above, but will allow upward flow back when the pressure is greater from below. This is accomplished by an internal ball and seat.
When setting, the mandrel is held in stationary and the outside components are pushed downwards - firstly to anchor the slips and secondly to expand the packing.
Both of these are then held in place by a lock ring system. At a predetermined force, a shear stud parts and releases the running tool from the plug. When milling, the plug's bottom is slotted to prevent spinning during operations. The slotted bottom mates with the plug's top mandrel to prevent spinning when plugs are stacked in the well.
